GEOG 360 - Computer Cartography


Units: 3
Fundamentals of map design and communication theory; hands-on experience in computer mapping. Effective graphic representation of spatial data; concepts in spatial data structure and database management; and lab-oriented software applications.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate cartographic literacy in the form of identifying place location, map interpretation, and map creation.
  2. Apply the Gestalt theory of visual perception and the map communication theory in basic map design.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to quantitatively analyze and artistically communicate complex spatial phenomena through the use of maps and graphics.
  4. Attain working knowledge of using computer graphics software to create maps and graphics for communicative and/or analytical purposes.
  5. Apply the map communication theory in map design and graphic communication of spatial data.
