SLHS 303 - Hearing and Speech Science Units: 3 Acoustic fundamentals of hearing, voice, and speech, including audition (hearing sensitivity and thresholds, masking, critical bands, and speech perception), phonation (glottal source signal and source-filter theory), articulation (acoustical phonetics of consonants and vowels), resonance, and clinical applications.
Prerequisites: SLHS 301 and PHYS 304, and declared major in B.S. Speech Pathology and Audiology, or admitted graduate student. Co-requisites: SLHS 302. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Demonstrate mastery of the basic mathematics necessary for the study of acoustics.
- Demonstrate mastery of the basic physics necessary for the study of acoustics. Apply acoustics principles to the study of voice, speech, and hearing.
- Demonstrate understanding of psychoacoustics (how humans perceive sound, especially as it relates to speech sounds).
- Demonstrate ability to use instrumentation and software to collect and analyze samples of normal and disordered voice, speech and hearing.
