ENGL 462 - Children’s Literature before 1900

Children’s literature before 1900, with attention to social and cultural attitudes about childhood that influenced the history and development of the genre.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: ENGL 204.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate familiarity with genres, themes, history, and structures of important works in children’s literature before 1900;
  2. identify and describe the characteristics of different genres, literary forms, and themes within children’s literature;
  3. locate and summarize secondary texts related to important works of children’s literature before 1900;
  4. articulate in cogent writing meaningful connections between specific literary texts written for children, their themes, their historical contexts, and contemporary readers.
  5. engage in collaborative assignments, such as discussion, oral presentation, and peer editing.
