ENGL 301W - Writing for Inquiry (English for Speakers of Other Languages)


Units: 3
Provides multilingual students with a supportive context as they explore academic topics using multi-draft, inquiry-based approaches to written communication. Projects include analysis, argument, and synthesis essays that incorporate subject-matter knowledge and research.

 

Prerequisites: ENGL 101, ENGL 102, or ENGL 104, satisfaction of second composition and junior standing.
Credit Restrictions:  Not for English major credit.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: CR/NC grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Develop the ability to articulate a thesis that provides readers with a point of focus;
  2. Support positions with a variety of strategies such as reasons, details, results, anecdotes, examples, quotations, paraphrases, and questions to support positions;
  3. Practice using clear organizational strategies;
  4. Make use of a variety of transitions and other methods to ensure a smooth flow of ideas; 
  5. Use sources in a supporting manner such that the writer’s own ideas are discernible; 
  6. Indicate clearly the source of quoted, paraphrased, or summarized materials within and at the end of essays;
  7. Use precise language and varied syntax; edit grammar with intended audience in mind
  8. Create out-of-class essays that meet standards and expectations of academic audiences.
