THEA 322 - History of Musical Theatre Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C Musical theatre from 1866 to the present; 19th-century minstrel and variety shows; the theatre of social change in the 20’s and 30’s; and “concept” musicals after 1970. Requires theatre attendance.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements. Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-UD-C - Upper Division Arts or Humanities Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Discuss the complex challenges of everyday life as portrayed by the characters in musical theatre.
- Analyze the issues, perspectives, and values found in musical theatre stories.
- Apply the lessons found in musical theatre to promote social justice in the community.
