TED 420 - Art Skills for Teachers Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C Designed specifically for teachers with little or no art experience. Work in drawing, printmaking, weaving, papier-mâché puppets, masks, batik, tie dyeing, lettering. Suggestions for translating teacher skills into activities for children. Lecture Units: 2; Activity Units: 1.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements. Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3, and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better. Repeatability: May be repeated once for credit, for a maximum of 6 units. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-UD-C - Upper Division Arts or Humanities Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- use a variety of art media in an elementary classroom
- demonstrate understanding of why diverse exemplars in art are necessary to teach California’s student population
- create an artwork based on personal experience/culture
- discuss artwork
- create and present an elementary level art lesson that is rooted in a specific cultural background.
- analyze, interpret, and derive meaning from artworks
- demonstrate the ways in which art can connect with other curricular areas.
UD-C. Upper-division Arts or Humanities Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply the principles, methodologies, value systems, and thought processes employed in the arts and humanities;
- analyze cultural production as an expression of, or reflection upon, what it means to be human; and
- demonstrate how the perspectives of the arts and humanities are used by informed, engaged, and reflective citizens to benefit local and global communities.
