KIN 321 - Elementary Classroom Teachers as Movement Educators


Units: 4
Growth and development in children with regard to physical education and the importance of physical activity for the classroom. Students explore standards based planning, team building, assessment, and cross-curricular lesson development. Lecture Units: 3; Activity Units: 1.

Prerequisites: B.A. Liberal Studies major.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Describe the concept of physical education as currently defined by the profession and define their role in providing physical activity for their students.
  2. Explain the value of physical education programs in the elementary grades.
  3. Identify developmentally appropriate practices and activities for teaching movement to children.
  4. Identify health- and skill-related fitness concepts.
  5. Develop strategies to integrate students with special needs into planned movement.
  6. Identify resources helpful in providing quality physical education (professional organizations, websites, books, and journals, etc.).
  7. Identify, describe and implement California Physical Education Content Standards and CA New Standards into Elementary Physical Education.
  8. Establish plans for including quality physical education within core disciplines in an elementary classroom.
