POSC 343 - Survey of American Law


Units: 3
The basic elements of the American legal system, its essential values, and its impact on society. Personal injury, contracts, criminal law, regulation, and international law. Emphasis on case law as the basis for exploring the legal system.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Understand how law is a product of political, social and economic forces and how each of these in turn is molded by the law.
  2. Describe the main features of the written U.S. Constitution as well as understand the history and interpretation process of that document.
  3. Understand the power of courts and their role in the political process
  4. Have a theoretical understudying of criteria for the evaluation of success and failure in law.
