PH 410 - Qualitative Methods in the Health Sciences


Units: 3
Purpose and appropriate use of qualitative methods in the health sciences. Special emphasis will be placed on the generation and interpretation of qualitative data necessary for understanding and addressing community and public health issues.

Prerequisites: PH 130 and PH 250.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Clarify the purpose and principles of qualitative inquiry and associated research methods in the health sciences, including the role of informed consent and other ethical considerations.
  2. Describe the overall purpose and application of qualitative methods within the larger health research enterprise, including identifying and addressing population concerns and needs, as well as assessment and evaluation of public health programs and practices.
  3. Distinguish different qualitative approaches and the rationale for use of each in the health sciences.
  4. Compare specific methods of qualitative data collection for value and relevance to understand complex community health concerns.
  5. Design a research project for which qualitative methods would be suitable in the health sciences.
  6. Characterize researcher bias in qualitative research for the health sciences.
