BIOL 602 - Preparation for Undergraduate Instruction in Biology Units: 3 Prepares graduate students for the roles and responsibilities of the Biology Teaching Associate (TA). Involves training in disciplinary pedagogy, policies, and safety. Provides opportunities to develop teaching skills, access resources, receive feedback, and participate in a support network.
Prerequisites: M.S. Biological Science major. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: ABC/NC grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Design a learning activity/create learning materials that include assessable learning outcomes in the integration of pedagogical strategies to help students achieve those learning outcomes.
- Facilitate effective group discussion and other student-centered learning activities.
- Demonstrate improved and varied teaching skills through participation in various “micro-teaching” simulations and/or in-person classroom observations.
- Develop and apply consistent grading criteria and provide robust feedback in the assessment of student work.
- Provide self-assessment as well as constructive feedback to peers to improve teaching skills.
- Identify campus resources and services that can provide the TA and his/her students with educational assistance.
- Apply appropriate procedures/protocols and identify campus contacts needed during emergency situations.
- Conduct office hours effectively and safely.
