ART 344 - Animation II


Units: 3
Production of intermediate to advanced level computer-based animation with emphasis on drawn and stop-motion techniques used for storytelling and creative communication. Analyze and apply animation principles in assignments and projects using both digital and non-digital media.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: ART 327.
Prerequisites: ART 244.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Create original animations using stop-motion and drawing based animation methods while judiciously employing the formal elements and organizing principles of animation art including action/movement(anticipation, follow through, squash & stretch, easing, timing, cycles) extremes, tweening, sequence, narrative, shot composition, editing, and sound;
  2. Apply project development and pre-production skills to the creation of original animation;
  3. Critically analyze their own animation and work processes (camera operation, character & set design/making, lighting, sound recording and editing, image making, creative writing, scriptwriting, storyboarding), as well as examples of animation from the larger media culture;
  4. Refine their own work based on critical feedback and self-evaluation;
  5. Understand the role of animation as a medium within both historical and contemporary art practices;
  6. Collaborate with peers in the development and execution of animations.
