STAT 100 - Elements of Statistics and Probability


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-B4
Descriptive statistics (measures of central tendency, dispersion, correlation), elementary discrete probability distributions.  Introduction to tests of statistical hypotheses.  Use of computers.  Must complete course with a grade of “C-” or better in order to earn General Education, Area B4, credit.

Co-requisites: STAT 100A required for students in Category III and IV.
Credit Restrictions: Not open to students with credit for STAT 110 or STAT 303.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: ABC/NC grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Upon completion students will have the following competencies covering quantitative literacy, numeracy skills and problem solving:
  2. Know formal statistical concepts and formulae, and find sources for key statistical ideas;
  3. manipulate and use theories; graphically display and interpret results, and perform basic statistical computations;
  4. apply statistical theory at an elementary level, identify problems, evaluate and discuss statistical measures and results.

  1. Demonstrate a proficient and fluent ability to reason quantitatively;
  2. demonstrate a general understanding of how practitioners and scholars collect and analyze data, build mathematical models, and/or solve quantitative problems; and
  3. apply quantitative reasoning skills in a variety of real-world contexts, defined by personal, civic, and/or professional responsibilities.
