SOC 385 - Childhood and Society Units: 4 Examines how childhood relates to social/political issues in society. Attention will be paid to understanding our own childhood, the social/historical construction of childhood, and race, class, gender and other social factors that intersect with childhood experiences.
Prerequisites: SOC 100. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Students will be able to communicate different ideas and perspectives on socio-historical shifts in the treatment of children while keeping an open mind about perspectives other than their own (PLO 2.).
- Students will learn how social location (race, ethnicity, gender, citizenship) influence micro level experiences of and macro level policies that govern the treatment of children in the past and in the present (PLO 3).
- Through exposure to empirical and theoretical scholarship, students will learn to identify and integrate academic perspectives on various topics related to childhood (SLO 6).
