NURS 451 - Community Health Nursing Practice

This course applies concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention at the individual, family, community and systems levels. The focus is to promote health equity by addressing social determinants of health through the application of the nursing process. Note: The Social Justice Overlay requirement is satisfied upon completion of the two-course sequence, NURS 450 and NURS 451.

Prerequisites: B.S. Nursing major
Co-requisites: NURS 450.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Utilize the nursing process to provide services to individuals, families and communities.
Identify the socioeconomic institutional and systems factors that can promote or hinder the health of communities.
Apply multiple approaches to the assessment of a community.
Apply principles of epidemiology in community health nursing practice to promote the health of individuals, families and communities.
Collaborate with intra- and inter-disciplinary team members to provide health services to individuals, families, groups and the community.
Identify strategies that nurses can use to impact health policy development in community and public health.
