SOC 415 - Popular Culture


Units: 4
An analysis of the historical development of modern popular culture through its interaction with both elite and commercial cultures.  Various examples from contemporary popular culture (for example: popular music, television, movies) will be examined in detail.        

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online Asynchronous or Online Synchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Grasp the social meaning and significance of examples of contemporary popular culture (SLO1; Maps to PLO1)
  2. Comprehend the critical depiction of class, race and gender in the best of popular culture, for example The Wire or Mad Men.(SLO3; Maps to PLO3)
  3. Read and comprehend sociological theories of popular culture, commercial culture and the role of fans in the creation of popular culture. (SLO6; Maps to PLO6)
