CRJ 450 - Women in Criminal Justice

Analysis of women/girls and crime. Examines how gender impacts pathways into the criminal justice system, types of offending, victimization, and women/girls’ experience of incarceration. The role of female and male criminal justice professional in interfacing with women/girls.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Analyze the nature and extent of female offending form a feminist theoretical perspective;
Understand the key differences between male and female offending patterns;
Describe the social and legislative trends leading to the unprecedented rise in women’s/girls’ incarceration;
Examine racial differentials among female offenders in the criminal justice system;
Examine historical approaches to female offending from a feminist theoretical perspective including recent reforms and “gendered responsive” strategies.
