CHEM 111 - General Chemistry I


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-B1
Fundamental principles of chemistry: periodic trends, composition of compounds and solutions, stoichiometry, gases, heat and enthalpy, atomic and molecular structure, bonding.

Co-requisites: CHEM 111L; MATH 120, MATH 125, or MATH 130.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Classify the properties and transformations of matter.
  2. Explain the periodic properties of elements.
  3. Infer and quantify the composition of compounds and solutions.
  4. Predict the outcome of chemical reactions.
  5. Model thermochemical transformations at constant volume or pressure.
  6. Apply the quantum mechanical model to explain atomic structure.
  7. Determine molecular bonding using Lewis, molecular orbital, and valence bond theories.
  8. Predict molecular geometries using VSEPR theory.
  9. Relate the properties of gases using gas laws.
