ANTH 430 - Field Course in Ethnography

Securing, recording, ordering, and analyzing of cultural data; problems of participant observation and reporting information from cultural consultants; methods of data collection.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. identify the different ways that culture has been defined and used by anthropologists to analyze social phenomena;
  2. conduct ethnographic research from a culturally relativist perspective that recognizes that no one worldview should be the norm from which others are judged;
  3. think beyond individualistic explanations to interpret specific human experiences in their social, political, economic, and historical contexts;
  4. critically read and interpret anthropological studies; formulate productive research questions within anthropological frameworks of understanding;
  5. use ethnographic research methods, especially participant observation and interviewing, to address theoretical questions.
