Music: Composition

  • MUS 180 - Music Workshop


    Units: 3
    Weekly workshop that concentrates on a wide range of topics related to music creation. The topics, which include the performance of student works, will be guided both by contemporary concerns and by the interests of the group.

    Strongly Recommended Preparation: Basic knowledge of music is not required, though encouraged. All kinds of music creation are welcome!
    Repeatability: May be repeated for credit for a maximum of 6 units.
    Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
    Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
  • MUS 280 - Essentials of Music Technology


    Units: 3
    An introduction to the fundamental concepts of music technology, including acoustics and the elements of sound, audio recording, sample editing and overall sound mixing. The course will also briefly overview advanced topics in the field, such as DSP and synthesis.

    Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
    Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice)
  • MUS 411 - 16th Century Counterpoint


    Units: 3
    The writing of counterpoint modeled on the style of Palestrina. Additional work modeled on other 16th century composers may be introduced at the discretion of the instructor. 

    Strongly Recommended Preparation: MUS 211.
    Equivalent Quarter Course: MUS 3061.
    Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
    Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
  • MUS 412 - 18th Century Counterpoint


    Units: 3
    The writing of counterpoint modeled on the style of J. S. Bach. Additional work modeled on other 17th and 18th century composers may be introduced at the discretion of the instructor.

    Prerequisites: MUS 211.
    Equivalent Quarter Course: MUS 3062.
    Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
    Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
