Biotechnology Certificate


Program Description

The Biotechnology Certificate Program (BCP) is a competitive, limited enrollment program emphasizing hands on training and theoretical instruction in the molecular life sciences. It was established in 1986 to meet the personnel requirements of the rapidly expanding Bay Area biotechnology industry. Each lab course provides a minimum of 90 hours of hands-on training and the curriculum is continually updated to meet the current needs of academic and commercial laboratories in biotechnology.

Degree Requirements

The 20-unit Biotechnology Certificate Program is designed to be completed in a typical academic year of two semesters. A certificate is awarded upon completion of a 2-day, cumulative exit exam. 

Admission Requirements

  • Possess a degree in any field in the biological sciences.
  • Complete undergraduate courses equivalent to those required of biological science majors at CSUEB including a: 
    • year of introductory biology
    • year of general chemistry
    • year of organic chemistry
    • quarter/semester of Microbiology* 
    • quarter/semester of Biochemistry*
    • quarter/semester of Genetics*
    • quarter/semester of Molecular Cell Biology*
  • Possess an overall GPA of 2.75 or greater.
  • Possess a GPA of 3.0 or greater in all biology courses taken as an upper division student.

*Note: a strong applicant has taken these courses within the last 3 years.

Biotechnology Certificate Requirements (20 units)


Exit Exam


Completion of all required courses and a GPA of B or higher is a prerequisite for taking the exit exam. The exit exam will consist of 7 sections, one for each of the 6 required courses (excluding 601A and 601B) and one section of calculations relevant to the cell and molecular biologist.  There are no units associated with the exam.
