Mission Statement
The Department of Music and Performing Arts welcomes and supports a diverse student body by offering outstanding, culturally relevant experiences in music, theatre, and dance within a nurturing and inclusive environment. Through performance, creative activity, research, scholarship, and teaching, students develop a deep appreciation for the performing arts while preparing students for careers as performers, composers, choreographers, teachers, and independent scholars. Grounded in rigorous creative inquiry and a commitment to collaboration and social justice, the department cultivates passionate, thoughtful artists ready for advanced study and meaningful contribution to their communities.
About the Department
The study of music and the performing arts is a noble, although often challenging, path. These disciplines are not always easy, but they can be deeply fulfilling in a way that few other pursuits in life can compare. Our work as musicians, actors, directors, and dancers has the potential to change us and those who witness it. Our work informs our views of life, love, happiness, grief, loss, and the entire human condition. The responsibility is great, yet the reward may be even greater. Our outstanding programs will provide you with a framework upon which you will be able to build a lasting foundation in your chosen art.
Music Facilities
Our main Recital Hall, located on the main floor at MB 1055, offers wonderful acoustic properties perfect for chamber and vocal performances. Our Instrumental Rehearsal Studio, also on the main floor at MB 1039, can accommodate rehearsals and performances of our large ensembles. Both spaces are record-ready and are connected by a state-of-the-art recording studio. Our electronic music studios provide extensive facilities for music synthesis, electronic composition, film and video scoring, digital recording, editing, processing, and mixing, as well as work with multimedia and telecommunications and the development of custom software and hardware.
There are numerous practice rooms and over 60 pianos throughout the building, available on both floors. They are reserved for music majors and minors and are accessible anytime the music building is open.
At the heart of our thriving music community is the Music Resource Center (MRC). A depot of performance and study materials for music majors, the MRC boasts a robust collection of scores, parts, and media materials including LPs, CDs, videos, and DVDs that enrich and expand the curricular offerings at CSU East Bay. The MRC also coordinates room scheduling and handles concert and student recital scheduling and printed program production.
