Department Statement
The Department of Social Work offers instruction at the graduate level to a diverse multicultural and multiracial student population, leading to the Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. Through teaching, advising and the field experience, MSW faculty members promote a sense of activism, social justice, commitment to change, and a vision of professional competence for students admitted to the program. The Cal State East Bay MSW degree focuses on urban social work practice with vulnerable and/or oppressed populations. The two-year program requires 60 units of coursework. There are two concentrations of choice: Children, Youth and Families or Community Mental Health. Within the program of study, students engage in both academic classes and field experience. This melding of coursework and field experience prepares students for effective social work practice in today’s increasingly diverse, complex multicultural and multiracial society.
