Department Statement
The Department of English offers its diverse student population a rich array of courses in literature, language, creative writing, and composition. The department attempts to foster in its students an understanding and appreciation of 1) the major works of British and American literature, including works by and about ethnicand cultural minorities and women, 2) the history and structure of the English language in all its variety, and 3) the aims and processes of writing, both creative and critical. In all its courses, the department attempts to help its students develop the advanced skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking necessary for successful careers in teaching, publishing, law, administration, and business.
