PSYC 301W - Communication in Psychological Science


Units: 3; UWR
Develop skills in written, oral, and visual communication for psychological science. Practice writing in APA style, and tailoring messages for academic, professional, and public audiences, emphasizing clarity, critical thinking, and ethical communication.

Prerequisites: Satisfaction of second composition and completion of GE Areas 1A, 1B, 1C and GE-2 with grade C- (CR) or better
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in APA style through clear, well-structured written assignments appropriate for psychological science.
  2. Deliver effective presentations of psychological research tailored to academic, professional, and public audiences.
  3. Critically evaluate scientific writing and presentations, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and ethical considerations.
  4. Integrate visual communication tools (e.g., posters, slides, infographics) to convey psychological concepts with accuracy and clarity.
  5. Adapt communication strategies to diverse audiences, balancing technical rigor with accessibility.

  1. Complete a variety of reading and writing tasks that incorporate subject-matter knowledge;
  2. Adjust their writing for different audiences, showing awareness of expectations for academic writing in general and adhering to discipline-specific conventions when appropriate;
  3. Demonstrate critical thinking and logical reasoning, including strategies common in a discipline, in the development and organization of ideas in written texts;
  4. Take into account multiple perspectives and key disciplinary concepts when presenting their ideas in writing;
  5. Revise their writing in response to feedback in order to improve idea development, clarity, coherence, and correctness.
