MLL 215 - Asian Martial Arts & Harmonious Life

Explore cultural and historical contexts of martial arts traditions and reinventions in modernity, diaspora, and globalization. Highlights how martial arts intersect with race, gender, class, and how communities use martial practice to preserve culture, resist oppression, and achieve social justice.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Analyze martial arts texts, films, and practices from East Asian as humanistic works, interpreting their aesthetic traditions, cultural values, and impact on personal perspectives.
  2. Explain how East Asian cultural, philosophical, and historical contexts including Confucian ethics, Daoist thought, Buddhist practice, samurai codes, and nationalist reinventions shaped martial arts traditions and their global adaptations.
  3. Evaluate how diverse identities in East Asia, such as gender roles, class hierarchies, regional traditions, ethnic minorities, and diasporic communities, influence martial arts practice, representation, and reception.
  4. Apply humanistic perspectives to examine how martial arts in East Asian cultures reflect and critique systems of power, including feudal hierarchies, nationalism, colonialism, modernization, and commercialization.
  5. Describe the challenges martial arts communities face in addressing inequities of access, representation, and appropriation across different cultural and historical contexts.
  6. Propose and reflect on ways East Asian martial arts can be used to preserve cultural traditions, foster cross-cultural understanding, and contribute to more inclusive and equitable societies.
