ENGL 111 - College Writing: Stretch II (Online) Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-1A An introduction to writing for academic purposes, critical analysis, and argumentation that is offered in an online environment exclusively for students in fully online programs. Must earn C- (CR) or better for GE credit.
Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-1A - Lower Division English Composition Prerequisites: ENGL 110. Declared major in a fully online program (e.g. ANTH, SOC, HDEV, ES, HIST, PHIL, etc.) Co-requisites: ENGL 119 (required for Category IV placement; strongly encouraged for Category III placement) Credit Restrictions: Not for English major credit.
Possible Instructional Methods: Online-Synchronous. Grading: ABC/NC grading only. Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Recognize how writers adapt language for various audiences and purposes, including those common in academic writing tasks;
- Apply rhetorical knowledge and critical thinking to increase reading comprehension and improve writing effectiveness;
- Use a variety of flexible strategies to develop ideas and shape written drafts;
- Utilize resources, such as feedback and published reference materials, to improve clarity and coherence when revising drafts;
- Demonstrate respect for the thoughts of others and an ability to take into account multiple perspectives when presenting one’s ideas;
- Produce a thoughtful, carefully edited 5-7 page academic essay with a clear thesis, unified and well-developed paragraphs, transitions, supporting evidence, and appropriate language.

- Explain and demonstrate the principles and rhetorical perspectives of effective writing in English, including its form, content, context, and style.
- Advocate for a cause or idea, presenting facts and arguments in an organized and accurate manner.
