INFO 401 - Creating Accessible Podcasts: Disability, Media Accessibility, and Information Literacy Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-4; Diversity This course explores disability, accessibility, and information literacy through podcast creation, applying disability justice, WCAG, UDL, and equitable design to design, evaluate, and share inclusive media informed by historical and societal contexts.
Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-UD-4 - Upper Division Social and Behavioral Sciences, Overlay -Diversity Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas 1A, 1B, 1C and GE-2 with grade C- (CR) or better (GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 for students on the 2024-25 or earlier catalogs). Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division GE Area 4 requirements. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of disability as a diverse and complex experience, recognizing its significance in the context of information access and media consumption, and apply principles of accessibility to ensure equitable representation and participation for all individuals in the creation, evaluation, and dissemination of media.
- Analyze the historical and societal context of disability, understanding how systemic inequalities have shaped access to information, and apply disability justice principles to evaluate and create accessible media that fosters inclusive and equitable information sharing for all.
- Identify and analyze user interface facilitators and barriers in podcast accessibility, applying information literacy principles to design and evaluate podcast content that is inclusive, ensuring seamless access for diverse audiences, including those with disabilities.
- Apply inclusive design best practices (including WCAG and UDL) to create podcast content that ensures equitable access to information for diverse audiences, while critically reflecting on how one’s own identity and social position shape approaches to accessibility, representation, and audience engagement.
