CHEM 670 - Scientific Writing in Chemistry and Biochemistry Units: 3 Development and improvement of scientific writing skills based on guidelines specific to Chemistry and Biochemistry. Students learn to plan and outline writing projects, utilize writing tools to create drafts, and engage in peer-review, editing and revisions.
Co-requisites: CHEM 470 Strongly Recommended Preparation: CHEM 680 Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Identify scientific writing conventions in the field of chemistry and biochemistry.
- Effectively communicate scientific information for chemistry-based audiences in various formats, such as conference abstracts, typical sections of journal manuscripts and research theses, and scientific reports.
- Master scientific writing skills including information sorting, outlining, and developing coherent story lines and narrative story arches.
- Provide and evaluate peer reviews to enhance scientific writing through editing and revising, both individually and in a writing team.
- Complete a written proposal for their individual research thesis or capstone project to be shared with their advisors.
- Evaluate the broader social impacts of effective scientific communication, as well as the benefits and risks associated with AI in the context of scientific writing.
