MUS 360A - Mariachi Ensemble


Units: 1
Chamber ensemble focusing on traditional and contemporary mariachi. Students study history, cultural context, composers, and song forms while rehearsing and performing as an ensemble. Emphasis is placed on developing stylistic, technical, and collaborative skills essential for growth as ensemble musicians.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Students should have a basic knowledge of how to play a mariachi instrument or a basic knowledge of singing. The ability to read sheet music is helpful but not required.
Repeatability: Repeatable for credit up to 8 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice)
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Develop technical and stylistic proficiency on a mariachi instrument or voice.
  2. Perform in an ensemble with accurate intonation, rhythm, and phrasing.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of standard mariachi repertoire and song forms (son, huapango, ranchera, bolero, jarabe).
  4. Understand cultural and historical significance of mariachi as an art form.
  5. Build collaborative and professional ensemble skills.
