NURD 418 - Collective Health Units: 2 Focus on dynamic conceptualizations of health, health-in-all policy, and the centrality of enacting change for health equity. Students will examine historical efforts and contribute to current initiatives promoting personal health, public health, and community-based (grassroots and non-profit) initiatives.
Prerequisites: Nursing major and: NURS 320, NURS 323, NURS 324, NURS 325, NURS 328, NURS 329, NURS 326, Open to nursing majors only Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Analyze connections and distinctions between individual health, public health, collective health, population health, and how these connect people, place, and health
- Contrast mechanisms for change within governmental institutions, non-profit organizations, grassroots organizations, and social movements
- Apply multiple theoretical frameworks including critical theory, cultural safety, social epidemiology, health equity, community cultural wealth, and social justice to explain health implications of current events
- Articulate the priorities, goals, principles, and outcomes of multiple local grassroots and non-profit organizations and how they relate to collective health
- Engage in sustained and active involvement in service-learning and civic engagement opportunities to serve as change agents to promote collective health and social justice
- Distinguish between interventions, risk factors, resources, living conditions, institutions, and systems, particularly in relation to the power dynamics and scope of each
