SLHS 409 - Speech Sound Disorders Units: 2 This course introduces students to speech sound acquisition, including typical and atypical phonological development. Models of speech sound production and theories of phonology will also be addressed. The course will also cover evidence-based assessment and treatment practices for speech sound disorders.
Prerequisites: Declared major in B.S. Speech Pathology and Audiology, SLHS 204, SLHS 302 Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Name, define and contrast typical and atypical articulation and development and phonological processes in English.
- Describe theories of phonology and models of speech sound production.
- Demonstrate skills in the application of evidence-based practice of speech sound disorders (e.g., articulation/phonological disorders, childhood apraxia of speech), including searching for, analyzing, and applying available clinical evidence.
- Describe the difference between articulation and phonological disorders.
- Outline components of the assessment process in speech sound disorders and write an assessment summary.
- Describe key intervention models and select appropriate intervention strategies for various profiles of speech sound disorders.
