SW 303 - Introduction to Social Welfare Research Units: 4 This course will examine the role of research, the logic of research, the stages of the research process, various types of research designs, techniques of data collection/analysis, and strategies for evaluating service delivery in social work practice.
Prerequisites: Social Work major. Successful completion of SW 300, SW 301, and SW 325W. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Synchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Describe the basic principles and methods of qualitative and quantitative social and behavioral science research.
- Identify, evaluate, and use research in support of culturally competent, evidence-informed social work practice, services delivery, policy-making and advocacy.
- Understand the relationship of social work values and ethics to the responsible design and use of research, especially in a collaborative, community-based manner that promotes social justice among vulnerable, at-risk and diverse, minority populations.
- Recognize negative implications and socio-cultural biases inherent in specific studies and specific areas of literature for vulnerable, at-risk and diverse, minority populations.
- Be able to locate, read, understand, criticize, and discuss (orally and in writing) research literature that is relevant to social work practice.
