INFO 390 - Scholarly Communication & Knowledge Creation Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-4; Social Justice Survey of library research methods emphasizing: sociopolitical contexts of scholarly communication; social justice implications of hegemonic knowledge production; effectively reading, evaluating, and synthesizing scholarly publications; appropriately selecting and using data collected using different methods; identifying methods used in scholarly communication.
Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-UD-4 - Upper Division Social and Behavioral Sciences, Overlay - Social Justice Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas 1A, 1B, 1C and GE-2 with grade C- (CR) or better (GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 for students on the 2024-25 or earlier catalogs). Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units), and completion of lower division GE Area 4 requirements (Area D1-2 requirements for students on the 2024-25 or earlier catalogs), and completion of INFO 250: Introduction to Critical Information Studies with a grade of C- (CR) or better. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Critically analyze the sociopolitical complexity and power imbalances within scholarly communication, as well as the social justice implications of hegemonic knowledge production, especially as it relates to the creation, distribution, use, value, and attribution of information sources.
- Develop a comprehensive search strategy that incorporates topic scoping; effectively navigating sources of information such as library collections and databases; applying evaluation criteria; and using evidence to support a scholarly argument.
- Analyze and describe the strengths, weaknesses, and practical applications of a variety of research methods in the social and behavioral sciences.
- Read and analyze scholarly publications to determine which research methods were applied and how the chosen research methods impacted the collection of data and the conclusions drawn from that data.
