ES 222 - Race in the City Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-6; Social Justice Examines how urban planning, development, and social structures shape racial and class inequalities across U.S. communities, including urban, suburban, and rural areas. Students explore case studies of displacement and exclusion, as well as the ways communities create resilience, belonging, and resistance in their local environments.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Identify key historical events that excluded communities of color from accessing opportunities that would lead to social mobility and wealth accumulation.
- Investigate case studies of policies or practices that shaped the built environment of their hometown or city of residence.
- Provide examples of how marginalized populations form communities and resist exclusion, displacement, and systemic racism.

- Use a disciplinary perspective to analyze issues of social justice and equity.
- Describe the challenges to achieving social justice.
- Identify ways in which individuals and/or groups can contribute to social justice within local communities, nations, or the world.
