MUS 485 - Advanced Sound Design I: Sampling, Editing, and Mixing

Advanced Sound Design 1: Sampling, Editing, and Mixing focuses on creative music production with sampling. Students develop advanced recording, editing, and processing techniques while building practical workflows for music, sound design, and multimedia applications through hands-on projects and critical listening.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Students enrolling in Advanced Sound Design are strongly encouraged to have completed MUS 381 Essentials of Music Technology or possess equivalent knowledge. This includes a solid foundation in audio and MIDI concepts, familiarity with Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), and basic skills in recording, editing, and signal flow.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Understand Sound Design as both an artistic and technical process, and know the artistic and technical vocabulary with which a Sound Designer communicates.
  2. Examine the principles and techniques associated with sampling and samplers, including recording, editing, and programming
  3. Create fully functional sampler programs with their own source material
  4. Create an audio project based on the use of sampling and samplers
