GS 322 - Navigating for Success as a Sankofa Scholar II


Units: 2 ; Breadth Area: Diversity
Designed to support transfer students in the Sankofa Scholars Program Learning Community as they continue their journey at CSUEB. Focuses on leadership development, community engagement/advocacy, and building relationships across culture, language, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, abilities, and age. Note: The Diversity Overlay requirement is satisfied upon completion of the two-course sequence, GS 321 and GS 322.

Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: Overlay - Diversity
Prerequisites: Junior or senior standing and department consent.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Establish a peer-support network within the Sankofa Learning Community;
  2. Identify and use key campus resources and services;
  3. Apply skills related to sustained academic success and career exploration;
  4. Demonstrate how community engagement, cultural competency, and advocacy for self and society impact personal growth and benefit the lives of others;
  5. Compare and contrast current and historical systems of oppression and their impact on the lived experiences of Blacks and African cultural groups in the U.S., with a lens on the intersectionality of race and gender;
  6. Explain how advocacy has impacted Blacks and African cultural groups throughout U.S. history.


Diversity Overlay Learning Outcomes
 

  1. Describe the histories, experiences or views of one or more cultural groups.
  2. Analyze the overlap or intersection of social identities of oneself and/or other cultural groups (e.g., culture, gender, class, sexuality, religion, disability, immigration status, and/or age).
  3. Examine the impact of their own identity on their experiences with and/or views of other cultural groups.
