SPAN 246 - Intermediate Spanish for Healthcare Professionals


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-4
This course, for students with prior Spanish speaking ability, will develop student communicative competence in Spanish language areas relevant to healthcare and related fields.

Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-4 - Lower Division Social and Behavioral Sciences
Prerequisites: SPAN 142 or SPAN 146.
Credit Restrictions: Not for Spanish major credit.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Demonstrate increased proficiency in Spanish by leading nuanced medical discussions across a variety of healthcare and clinical settings.
  2. Interpret and evaluate intermediate to advanced spoken Spanish, including regional and sociolinguistic variations among Latin American Spanish-speaking communities.
  3. Accurately use intermediate to advanced medical vocabulary in oral and written communication, maintaining grammatically appropriate structures for the designated proficiency level.
  4. Analyze and integrate cultural practices and belief systems of Spanish-speaking populations to promote trust and culturally competent care in clinical interactions.
  5. Compare and critically assess healthcare practices and cultural differences across Spanish-speaking communities.
  6. Design, conduct, and critique medical interviews and role-play scenarios that address physical and mental health concerns, demonstrating advanced analytical and communication skills.
