SPAN 246 - Intermediate Spanish for Healthcare Professionals Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-4 This course, for students with prior Spanish speaking ability, will develop student communicative competence in Spanish language areas relevant to healthcare and related fields.
Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-4 - Lower Division Social and Behavioral Sciences Prerequisites: SPAN 142 or SPAN 146. Credit Restrictions: Not for Spanish major credit.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate increased proficiency in Spanish by leading nuanced medical discussions across a variety of healthcare and clinical settings.
- Interpret and evaluate intermediate to advanced spoken Spanish, including regional and sociolinguistic variations among Latin American Spanish-speaking communities.
- Accurately use intermediate to advanced medical vocabulary in oral and written communication, maintaining grammatically appropriate structures for the designated proficiency level.
- Analyze and integrate cultural practices and belief systems of Spanish-speaking populations to promote trust and culturally competent care in clinical interactions.
- Compare and critically assess healthcare practices and cultural differences across Spanish-speaking communities.
- Design, conduct, and critique medical interviews and role-play scenarios that address physical and mental health concerns, demonstrating advanced analytical and communication skills.
