MLL 162 - Elementary Mandarin Chinese II: Language and Arts


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-3A
Further develop student’s ability to speak, read and write Mandarin Chinese. Deepen the knowledge of Chinese art culture, respond to aesthetic experiences in arts and demonstrate an understanding of the relationship among the self, the creative arts, and Chinese culture.

Prerequisites: MLL 161.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Communicate in Mandarin Chinese using expanded vocabulary and grammatical structures in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, while appreciating the expressive qualities of language as an art form.
  2. Engage in conversations, role-plays, and written tasks on everyday and cultural topics, demonstrating awareness of artistic and cultural expression in Chinese communication.
  3. Read and write short passages in simplified characters with improved accuracy, recognizing calligraphy and character writing as both a linguistic system and a traditional Chinese art.
  4. Examine Chinese artistic and cultural practices such as poetry, calligraphy, music, film, and traditional performance, and analyze their historical and cultural significance.
  5. Evaluate the impact of Chinese art forms and cultural expressions on their own perspectives and experiences, connecting language learning with the humanities and arts.
  6. Describe how diverse identities (e.g., regional, ethnic, generational, or gendered) influence artistic expression and language use in Chinese-speaking communities.
  7. Identify the role of art, performance, and cultural traditions in different Chinese-speaking settings and discuss their relevance in contemporary society.
