MLL 161 - Elementary Mandarin Chinese I: Language and Humanities


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-3B
The first semester of a one-year sequence in elementary Mandarin Chinese.  An introduction to the basic skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.  A communicative approach to the acquisition of the language with emphasis on the appreciation of the culture.

Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

1. Apply foundational Chinese grammar and vocabulary in speaking and writing within social and cultural contexts.
2. Communicate basic information such as greetings, names, nationalities, family, residence, and studies, and interact appropriately in social situations using culturally accurate expressions.
3. Read, type, and write short passages in Pinyin and simplified characters, recognizing their cultural and historical development.
4. Describe key Chinese cultural concepts and traditions and examine their historical and contemporary significance.
5. Reflect on how learning Mandarin and engaging with Chinese culture shapes personal perspectives.
6. Analyze how cultural contexts and diverse identities influence language use and communication in Chinese-speaking communities.
