MLL 151 - Elementary Japanese I: Language and Humanities


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-3B
The first semester of a one-year sequence. Develops four basic skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing (Hiragana, Katakana and Basic Kanji) in modern Japanese. Emphasis on language acquisition, socially appropriate language use, and cultural understanding.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Accurately pronounce basic Japanese syllables and sentences.
  2. Construct basic sentence structures.
  3. Comprehend simple conversation and reading.
  4. Demonstrate an appreciation of Japanese arts and culture.
  5. Write and read Hiragana, Katakana and Basic Kanji.
