SPAN 146 - Beginning Spanish Language and Culture for Healthcare Professionals


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-3B
A communicative approach to the acquisition of the Spanish language with emphasis on the appreciation of the diverse culture and knowing the right lexicon across different Hispanophone cultures in the healthcare field.

Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-3B - Humanities
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Prior knowledge of Spanish language.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Demonstrate linguistic competence in Spanish by engaging in and leading medical discussions across diverse healthcare and clinical contexts.
  2. Interpret beginning to intermediate spoken Spanish, including regional variations among Spanish speakers from different Latin American backgrounds.
  3. Apply beginning to intermediate medical vocabulary accurately in speaking, writing, and conversation, using grammatically appropriate structures for the target proficiency level.
  4. Explain key cultural practices and belief systems of various Spanish-speaking communities to foster respectful and trust-based patient interactions.
  5. Compare and analyze cultural differences and healthcare practices across Spanish-speaking populations.
  6. Design and perform medical interviews, health histories, and role-play scenarios addressing physical and mental health concerns, demonstrating critical thinking and communication skills.
