MLL 261 - Intermediate Mandarin Chinese I: Hanzi Logographic Cultures


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-3B
The first semester of the intermediate course. Increased emphasis on the structure of the language, vocabulary building, conversation, appreciation of Chinese culture, and on training intermediate proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing Chinese.

Prerequisites: MLL 162 or MLL 163.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Apply intermediate grammar and vocabulary in speaking and writing to communicate ideas within cultural and social contexts.
  2. Comprehend and participate in extended conversations and discussions on cultural and social topics.
  3. Read and analyze short authentic texts in simplified characters, recognizing cultural and historical influences.
  4. Write multi-paragraph passages that express personal, cultural, and analytical perspectives.
  5. Evaluate how continued study of Mandarin and Chinese traditions shapes personal perspectives and worldview.
  6. Examine cultural and historical contexts in Chinese media, literature, and traditions.
  7. Analyze how diverse identities influence communication and participation in Chinese-speaking communities.
