HIST 333 - Sustainability in the Ancient World


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD ; Sustainability
Examination of how the ancient world preserved its cultures and economies during times of war, climate change, disease, and the use/misuse of natural resources; social justice.

Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-UD-3 - Upper Division Arts or Humanities, Overlay - Sustainability
Prerequisites: Satisfaction of second composition and completion of GE Areas 1A, 1B, 1C and GE-2 with grade C- (CR) or better (GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 for students on the 2024-25 or earlier catalogs).
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area 3 requirements (lower division Area C requirements for students on the 2024-25 or earlier catalogs).
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Critically analyze ancient history through primary and secondary sources, art, architecture, and archaeology.
  2. Compare and contrast various ancient cultures through the lens of sustainability
  3. Utilize basic analytic concepts for assembling, organizing, and interpreting historical evidence, and achieve digital literacy in accessing and presenting historical materials
  4. Create scholarship through the use of digital tools
  5. Compare and contrast what happened in the ancient world with what is happening today
  6. Write and speak clearly and persuasively about historical topic of Sustainability.

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply principles, methodologies, values systems, and thought processes employed in the arts and humanities.
  2. Analyze cultural production as an expression of, or reflection upon, what it means to be human.
