SLHS 404 - Child Language Disorders Units: 3 Introduction to the causes and characteristics of primary and secondary language and literacy disorders in children; evidence-based assessment and intervention across settings.
Prerequisites: SLHS Declared Major; and SLHS 204, SLHS 208, and SLHS 300. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Observe and label characteristics of developmental language and literacy disorders in toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children.
- Compare key similarities and differences between the language of a child with language disorder and a child who is learning more than one language.
- Outline components and objectives of the assessment process in developmental language disorders.
- Describe key evidence-based intervention models and select appropriate, evidence-based intervention strategies for a range of language and literacy disorder profiles, including language-based learning disabilities.
- Describe theories and research underlying the behavioral, linguistic, academic, and social aspects of childhood language disorders.
- List language characteristics, assessments, and intervention tools specific to autism spectrum disorders.
- List and discuss issues in school-based language intervention, including aligning goals to curriculum and classroom-based intervention.
