SLHS 300 - Communicative and Cognitive Development Across the Lifespan Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-4 Acquisition and development of speech, language, cognition, and communication from infancy through the lifespan in typically developing individuals. Topics include language and cognitive developmental milestones, development of pragmatic skills, and changes in these abilities across the lifespan.
Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-UD-4 - Upper Division Social and Behavioral Sciences Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas 1A, 1B, 1C and GE-2 with grade C- (CR) or better (GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 for students on the 2024-25 or earlier catalogs); and SLHS 208. Strongly Recommended Preparation: PSYC 100. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Describe the theories and processes relevant to language development and change across the lifespan.
- Describe developmental milestones for all domains of language (form, content and use).
- Describe the relationship between cognitive and communicative functioning for typical development and aging.
- Describe pre-literacy and literacy development.
- Explain cultural influences on language development.
- Describe theories, processes and milestones relevant to multilingual language development.
