ENGL 350 - Study of Language Units: 4 Theory of language, communication, and rhetoric; role of language in the personal, social, and cultural development of humans; origins, development, acquisition, and diversity of language; nature and function of symbolic systems; introduction to linguistic and rhetorical features and analytic methods.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Cultivate an inclusive view of human languages and a respect for language diversity as an integral part of global culture and civilization;
- Apply linguistic, sociolinguistic, and rhetorical concepts/methods to describe and analyze features of human languages;
- Describe the distinctive features of human and non-human communication systems;
- Analyze English and other languages to discover their similarities and differences in linguistic structures, discourse practices, and rhetorical acts;
- Develop writing, research, and communication skills for different audiences and purposes.
