HIST 201 - Why History Matters
Units: 4
Methods and skills for historical interpretation, including distinguishing primary sources from secondary works. Reasoning from evidence to establish valid historical assertions. Consideration of representation, empathy, and accuracy. Gateway to advanced work in the history and history-social science teaching majors.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Lower-division history course(s)

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Evaluate history as interpretations of the past based on evidence.
- Distinguish primary sources from secondary works.
- Identify scholarly sources using the University Library.
- Distinguish among summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation.
- Apply the Chicago-style citation system consistently.
- Demonstrate familiarity with archives, both physical and digital.
- Demonstrate organized collection and use of primary and secondary sources for historical research, in preparation for publication or teaching.
- Evaluate historical arguments.
- Present historical findings through oral projects, including teaching projects.
- Review major depth areas/themes through recent scholarship and professional practices, or teaching practices.
