SW 633 - Assessment and Treatment of Substance Abuse in Social Work Practice


Units: 4
Assessment and treatment of substance abuse issues in social work practice. Topics include prevalence of substance abuse, dual diagnosis, family systems, and evidence-based practices.

Prerequisites: M.S.W. major.
Credit Restrictions: Master of Social Work students only.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

1. Demonstrate an understanding of historical and contemporary factors and policies influencing substance misuse in the US.
2. Demonstrate a commitment to the values that guide social work practice with individuals, families and small groups with substance misuse problems while embracing cultural humility and managing personal biases.  
3. Conduct a strengths-based, person-in-environment substance use assessment and make appropriate referrals. 
4.Demonstrate an ability to critically analyze and apply various theoretical models and evidence-informed social work practice research, pertaining to substance misuse by diverse populations.  
5. Demonstrate facility with the intervention and evaluation of concepts of prevention, early screening and assessment, integrated behavioral health for co-occurring disorders, harm reduction, the stages of change, motivational interviewing, medication assisted treatment (MAT), and mutual aid groups, as well as the dynamics and treatment of substance misuse in individuals, families, and small groups. 
6. Demonstrate knowledge of the major substance misuse diagnostic categories and related mental health disorders, as well as the role that psychiatric diagnosis can play in a family’s ecological system. 
7. Demonstrate an understanding of social work advocacy and education regarding substance misuse in the general community of individuals, families, diverse populations, populations-at-risk and the professional community.
