SW 632 - Family Violence Across the Lifespan


Units: 4
This course provides students with an overview of family violence. It surveys the historical and social background of family violence, its social and psychological consequences for individuals, families and communities, as well as its prevention and intervention.

Prerequisites: M.S.W. major.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

1.  Articulate the prominent theories of family violence. 
2.  Understand social work’s role in relation to family violence and the complex tasks of social control, intervention, policy and advocacy, with particular attention to violence-vulnerable populations. 
3.  Assess for and detect the major forms of family violence (child/adolescent maltreatment, IPV, and elder/disabled maltreatment), in the context of diverse cultures and family constellations.
4.  Plan and implement culturally-relevant and trauma-informed, best practice (evidence-based) interventions, including appropriate referrals and mandated reports, regarding family violence prevention and intervention. 
5.  Critically discuss points of controversy about theory, assessment, intervention, and policy with family violence. 

6. Demonstrate an ability to manage and seek support in managing one’s biases and countertransference reactions to the challenging personal responses that arise when working with family violence.
