SW 603 - Introduction to Social Welfare Research
Units: 4
The role of research in social work, the logic of research, the stages of underlying research process, various types of research designs, techniques of data collection and analysis, and strategies for evaluating service delivery in all areas of practice.
Prerequisites: M.S.W. major.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Describe the basic principles and methods of qualitative and quantitative social and behavioral science research.
- Identify, evaluate, and use research in support of culturally competent, evidence-informed social work practice, services delivery, policy-making and advocacy
- Understand the relationship of social work values and ethics to the responsible design and use of research, especially in a collaborative, community-based manner that promotes social justice among vulnerable, at-risk and diverse, minority populations.
- Recognize negative implications and socio-cultural biases inherent in specific studies and specific areas of literature for vulnerable, at-risk and diverse, minority populations.
- Be able to locate, read, understand, criticize, and discuss (orally and in writing) research literature that is relevant to social work practice.
